Application of Pitcher Irrigation in Agro Forestry to Combat Deforestation and Rural Poverty in Bauchi State.
Application of Pitcher Irrigation in Agro Forestry to Combat Deforestation and Rural Poverty in Bauchi State.
The goal of the project is to combat deforestation and rural poverty through establishment of woodlots, orchards and vegetable gardens using pitcher irrigation technology.

The rainfall amount in the project area rarely exceeds 200mm throughout the season. Its intensity is in such a way that it falls within a very short period of time and most of it ends up as runoff, instead of infiltrating into the soil to recharge ground water. This situation exacerbates washing away of the largely sandy soil by
erosion leading to decline in soil productivity. This problem coupled with intensive cultivation without commensurate soil conservation and fertility restoration, degrades the soil and makes it less productive.

Project activities include; Project conceptualization and planning, Identification and selection of demonstration sites, Identification and meeting of community partners (CBOs) and initial contact, demonstration and sensitization workshop, Husbandry/nurturing of the plantation to maturity, dissemination workshops to community beneficiaries, meeting with interested LGs/Ministries to Sign MoU and Final Report. It includes groups like the women, children and aged.
